Uses of Tamoxol-20
Tamoxol-20 (tamoxifen 20 mg) is prescribed for:
- Early breast cancer – as hormone (endocrine) therapy after surgery, to help lower the chance of the cancer coming back.
- Advanced or metastatic breast cancer – to help control hormone receptor-positive disease.
- Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) – after surgery and radiotherapy, in selected patients.
- Breast cancer risk reduction – in women who are at high risk because of their family history or other factors.
Tamoxifen is used for cancers that are oestrogen receptor-positive (ER-positive), which means their growth is driven by the hormone oestrogen. It can be prescribed for women before or after the menopause, and for men with breast cancer. Your specialist will decide whether tamoxifen is right for you based on your test results and medical history.
How does Tamoxol-20 work?
Tamoxifen belongs to a group of medicines called selective oestrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). Many breast cancers have receptors that the hormone oestrogen attaches to, and this signal helps the cancer cells grow. Tamoxifen attaches to those receptors in breast tissue and blocks oestrogen from binding, which slows or stops the growth of hormone-sensitive cancer cells.
In some other tissues, such as the lining of the womb, tamoxifen acts more like oestrogen, which explains some of its risks.
How long does it take to work? Tamoxifen is a long-term treatment. It builds up in the body over several weeks, and its benefit comes from taking it every day for the full period your doctor recommends – often 5 years and sometimes up to 10 years.
Tamoxol-20 dosage: how to take it
- The usual dose is 20 mg (one tablet) once a day, taken at around the same time each day.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food.
- For breast cancer, treatment typically lasts 5 years and may be extended to 10 years. For risk reduction, a course is usually 5 years.
- Your dose and treatment length are decided by your prescribing doctor or oncology team – do not change the dose or stop taking tamoxifen without talking to them first.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for the next one. Never take two doses at once to make up for a missed dose.

Tamoxol-20 side effects
Like all medicines, tamoxifen can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Tell your care team about anything that troubles you.
Common side effects:
- Hot flushes and sweating
- Vaginal discharge, dryness or irregular periods
- Nausea
- Tiredness
- Fluid retention (swollen ankles)
- Leg cramps or joint aches
- Hair thinning and skin rash
Get medical help immediately if you have:
- Pain, swelling, warmth or redness in one leg – possible signs of a blood clot (deep vein thrombosis, DVT)
- Sudden shortness of breath, chest pain or coughing up blood – possible signs of a blood clot in the lung (pulmonary embolism)
- Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg, confusion or trouble speaking – possible signs of a stroke
- Any unusual vaginal bleeding (including after the menopause), bleeding between periods or pelvic pain or pressure – tamoxifen increases the risk of endometrial (womb) cancer and uterine sarcoma, so these symptoms must always be checked
- Changes in your eyesight
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of an allergic reaction
Who should not take Tamoxol-20?
Do not take Tamoxol-20 if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding – tamoxifen can harm an unborn baby
- Are allergic to tamoxifen or any other ingredient of the tablet
- Are taking tamoxifen to reduce breast cancer risk and have had a blood clot in a vein or the lungs, or need to take warfarin
Important safety information:
- Use reliable non-hormonal contraception (such as a condom or copper coil) during treatment and for a period after stopping, as advised by your doctor. Hormonal contraceptives are usually not recommended.
- Tamoxifen increases the risk of blood clots. Tell your doctor before any operation or long period of immobility, as treatment may need to be paused.
- Report any abnormal vaginal bleeding promptly and attend all gynaecological check-ups your doctor recommends.
Talk to your doctor first if you have a history of blood clots or stroke, liver disease, cataracts or other eye problems, high blood fat levels, or a family history of blood clotting disorders.
Tamoxol-20 drug interactions
Tell your doctor about every medicine you take, including those bought without a prescription and herbal products. Important interactions with tamoxifen include:
- Warfarin and similar anticoagulants – tamoxifen can increase their blood-thinning effect; your INR will need close monitoring.
- Strong CYP2D6 inhibitors – some antidepressants such as paroxetine and fluoxetine, and bupropion, cinacalcet and quinidine, may reduce the conversion of tamoxifen to its active form and make it less effective. Your doctor may suggest an alternative.
- Aromatase inhibitors (anastrozole, letrozole, exemestane) – are not usually taken at the same time as tamoxifen.
- Oestrogen-containing medicines – such as hormonal contraceptives and HRT, which can oppose the effect of tamoxifen.
- Rifampicin – can lower tamoxifen levels in the blood.
How to store Tamoxol-20
Store Tamoxol-20 below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light, in the original blister pack. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children, and do not use it after the expiry date printed on the pack.

Is Tamoxol-20 the same as Nolvadex?
Tamoxol-20 contains the same active ingredient (tamoxifen, as tamoxifen citrate) at the same strength (20 mg) as Nolvadex® 20 mg, so it works in the same way. The difference is the manufacturer, the name, the price and possibly the appearance of the tablet.
How long will I need to take tamoxifen?

Can I stop taking tamoxifen if I get side effects?
