Generic minoxidil is one of the most common treatments for hereditary hair loss. It contains the same active ingredient as Rogaine, and a generic minoxidil 5% topical solution often costs much less than the brand.

This guide explains what generic minoxidil is, how to use it, what to expect, and what changes the minoxidil price from one product to the next. For a detailed step-by-step on applying it, see our guide to minoxidil 5% for hair loss. Here we focus on generic vs brand and on price.

Key takeaways

  • The generic has the same active ingredient as Rogaine, which is why it usually costs less.
  • For men, the usual dose of the 5% solution is 1 ml applied to a dry scalp twice a day.
  • It takes 4 months or more to see results, and some extra shedding early on is common.
  • Results last only while you keep using it.
  • Stop and get medical advice if you have chest pain, a fast heartbeat, dizziness or swelling.
  • A valid prescription is required for every order of a prescription medicine.

What is generic minoxidil?

Minoxidil is a medicine applied to the scalp to treat androgenetic alopecia, also called male or female pattern hair loss. It is thought to work by widening blood vessels around the hair follicles and lengthening the growth phase of the hair cycle. This can slow hair loss and, for some people, help thinner hairs grow back thicker.

The generic contains the same active ingredient as the brand-name product Rogaine. It comes as a liquid solution or a foam, usually at 2% or 5% strength. It works best on the crown and top of the head, and on hair loss that started fairly recently. It does not treat hair loss caused by illness, scarring, some medicines or nutrition problems, so it is worth getting the cause checked first.

How to use minoxidil 5% solution

For men, the usual dose is 1 ml of the 5% solution applied to the affected areas of a dry scalp twice a day, morning and evening. Use the dropper or applicator provided, spread it over the thinning area and let it dry before styling or going to bed. Wash your hands afterwards.

Do not use more than 1 ml per dose or apply it more often. Using extra does not speed up results and may increase side effects.

What to expect

  • Be patient. It usually takes at least 4 months of twice-daily use before you see results.
  • Early shedding is common. Some people notice more hair falling out in the first few weeks. This is usually old hairs making way for new growth and tends to settle.
  • Keep using it. If you stop, any regrown hair is likely to be lost again over the following months.

Some men combine minoxidil with a tablet treatment. Read our guide to finasteride for hair loss and ask your doctor whether this is right for you.

Safety, side effects and who should not use it

Do not use minoxidil if:

  • Your scalp is red, inflamed, infected, sunburned or broken.
  • Your hair loss is sudden, patchy, or linked to a medical condition or new medicine.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You are under 18 or over 65, unless your doctor advises it.

The 5% strength is mainly used by men. Women should use 5% only if a doctor advises it, as it is more likely to cause unwanted facial hair. Tell your doctor if you have heart problems or low or high blood pressure before you start.

Side effects

The most common side effects are scalp itching, dryness, flaking or redness. Unwanted hair growth on the face or other areas can happen, especially if the solution runs onto the skin. Apply it carefully and wash your hands.

Stop using minoxidil and seek medical advice straight away if you notice chest pain, a fast or irregular heartbeat, feeling faint or dizzy, sudden unexplained weight gain, or swelling of the hands or feet.

Keep it away from pets

Minoxidil can be very harmful to pets, especially cats, even in small amounts. Let the solution dry fully before touching pets, do not let them lick treated skin, hands or pillows, and store the bottle out of their reach.

Generic minoxidil: why generic costs less

Brand-name medicines carry the cost of the original research, testing and marketing. Once the patent ends, other makers can produce the same active ingredient without repeating that work. Competition between makers then brings the price down.

A generic 5% solution contains the same active ingredient, at the same strength, as the brand it is a generic for. The bottle, applicator, scent and inactive ingredients may differ, but the part that treats hair loss is the same. Because you need to use minoxidil long term to keep results, a lower minoxidil price can make a real difference over a year.

What affects the generic minoxidil price?

FactorHow it changes the priceWhat to check
Strength (2% or 5%)The 5% strength may cost a little more than 2%.The strength your doctor has advised for you.
Solution vs foamFoam is often more expensive per month than liquid solution.Which form suits your scalp; some people find foam less irritating.
Bottle size / months of supplyLarger bottles or multi-packs usually lower the cost per month. How many months each bottle lasts at 1 ml twice a day.
Brand vs genericThe generic avoids brand-name costs and is usually cheaper. The same active ingredient and strength as the brand.
DeliveryShipping method and destination change the total.Delivery time to your country so you do not miss doses.

The best way to compare is cost per month. At 1 ml twice a day, you use about 60 ml a month. Divide the price by the number of months each pack covers, and compare products at the same strength and in the same form.

Frequently asked questions

Is generic minoxidil the same as Rogaine?

Yes, it contains the same active ingredient as Rogaine. The inactive ingredients, bottle and applicator may differ. At the same strength, it is expected to work in the same way.

Why is the minoxidil price lower for generics?

Generic makers do not repeat the original research and marketing, and competition keeps the price down. You pay for the same active ingredient without the brand-name costs.

How long does one bottle last?

At 1 ml twice a day, a 60 ml bottle lasts about a month. Check the bottle size before ordering so you can plan your supply.

Why am I losing more hair after starting?

Some shedding in the first few weeks is common and usually settles. Keep using it as directed. If shedding is heavy or lasts more than a couple of months, speak to your doctor.

Can women use minoxidil 5%?

Women should use the 5% strength only if a doctor advises it. Lower strengths are often used for women, and minoxidil must not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

What happens if I stop using it?

Any hair that has regrown is likely to fall out again within a few months of stopping. Minoxidil only works while you keep using it.
