What is Fincar?
Fincar 5 mg is a generic Proscar tablet made by Cipla Ltd. in India. Each film-coated tablet contains 5 mg of finasteride – the same active ingredient, at the same strength, as brand-name Proscar®. It is prescribed to men with an enlarged prostate, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Finasteride 5 mg gradually shrinks the prostate, which eases urinary symptoms and lowers the risk of sudden urine retention and the need for prostate surgery. Because it is taken every day long term, a generic like Fincar can save a lot compared with the brand – on our largest pack it costs about $0.64 per tablet.
Fincar comes in blister strips of 10 tablets. Choose a pack of 30, 60 or 90 tablets – one, two or three months of daily treatment.
Uses of Fincar
Fincar (finasteride 5 mg) is used for:
- Enlarged prostate (BPH) – a non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland that is common in men over 50.
It helps with symptoms such as a weak or interrupted urine stream, needing to pass urine often (especially at night), a feeling that the bladder has not emptied, and difficulty starting to urinate. Over time it also reduces the risk of being unable to pass urine at all (acute urinary retention) and of needing prostate surgery.
Your doctor may prescribe it on its own or together with an alpha-blocker such as tamsulosin or doxazosin.
Fincar is for adult men only. The 5 mg strength is not intended for hair loss – for that, finasteride 1 mg is used.
How does Fincar work?
The prostate grows in response to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Finasteride blocks the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which turns testosterone into DHT, lowering DHT levels in the blood and prostate by around 70%.
With less DHT, the prostate slowly shrinks – typically by about 20% over 6 to 12 months – which reduces pressure on the urethra and makes it easier to pass urine.
How long does it take? Some men notice improvement within 3 months, but it can take 6 months or longer to feel the full benefit. Finasteride keeps working only while you continue to take it.
Fincar dosage: how to take it
- Take one 5 mg tablet once a day, with or without food.
- Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not split or crush it.
- Take it at about the same time each day.
- If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next one at the usual time – do not take two tablets together.
- Keep taking it for at least 6 months, even if you do not notice a change straight away.
- No dose change is usually needed for older men or people with kidney problems.
Always follow the dose your doctor prescribes and go for regular check-ups.
Fincar side effects
Most men take finasteride 5 mg without problems. When side effects happen they are usually mild.
Possible side effects:
- Lower sex drive
- Difficulty getting or keeping an erection
- Reduced amount of semen during ejaculation
- Breast tenderness or enlargement
- Skin rash
Stop taking it and speak to your doctor straight away if you notice:
- Low mood, depression or thoughts of harming yourself
- A lump, pain or nipple discharge, or any other change in the breast
- Swelling of the lips, face, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing
- Testicular pain
Who should not take Fincar?
Do not take Fincar if you:
- Are a woman or a child
- Are allergic to finasteride or any ingredient of the tablet
- Already take dutasteride or another finasteride product
Pregnancy warning: women who are or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets, because the medicine can be absorbed through the skin and may harm a male baby. Whole, coated tablets are safe to touch.
Talk to your doctor first if you:
- Have liver problems
- Have a large amount of urine left in the bladder or a very weak flow – your doctor may need to check for blockage
- Are having a PSA blood test – finasteride roughly halves PSA levels, so your doctor must know you take it
- Have a history of depression
Before starting, your doctor should rule out prostate cancer, which can cause similar symptoms.
Fincar drug interactions
Finasteride has very few known drug interactions, but always tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you use.
- Alpha-blockers (tamsulosin, doxazosin, alfuzosin) – commonly prescribed together with finasteride for BPH.
- Dutasteride or other finasteride products – do not combine.
- Saw palmetto and other herbal prostate remedies – ask your doctor before combining.
- PSA blood tests – finasteride lowers PSA readings; your doctor will allow for this when checking results.
How to store Fincar
Store Fincar below 30°C in a dry place, in the original blister strip to protect it from light and moisture. Keep out of the sight and reach of children and pregnant women, and do not use after the expiry date on the pack.

Is Fincar the same as Proscar?
Fincar contains the same active ingredient (finasteride) at the same strength (5 mg) as Proscar®, so it works in the same way. It is made by Cipla in India and costs considerably less than the brand.
What is the difference between finasteride 5 mg and 1 mg?
Both contain finasteride. The 5 mg tablet (Fincar, Proscar®) is prescribed for an enlarged prostate, while the 1 mg tablet (Finpecia, Propecia®) is prescribed for male pattern hair loss. Take only the strength your doctor prescribes.
How long does Fincar take to work for BPH?
Some men feel an improvement in urinary symptoms within 3 months, but the full effect usually takes 6 months or more. Keep taking it daily even if you do not notice a change straight away.
Can Fincar be taken with tamsulosin?
Yes. Doctors often prescribe finasteride together with an alpha-blocker such as tamsulosin. The alpha-blocker eases symptoms quickly, while finasteride shrinks the prostate over time.
Does finasteride affect PSA tests?
Yes. Finasteride lowers PSA levels by about half after 6 months. Always tell your doctor you take it before a PSA test so the result can be interpreted correctly.
