What is Finpecia?
Finpecia 1 mg is a generic Propecia tablet made by Cipla Ltd. in India. Each film-coated tablet contains 1 mg of finasteride – the same active ingredient, at the same strength, as brand-name Propecia®. It is prescribed to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) on the crown and middle of the scalp in adult men.
Finasteride is taken once a day, every day, so long-term cost matters. Because Finpecia is a generic finasteride 1 mg tablet, it works in the same way as the branded medicine at a much lower price – on our largest pack it costs about $0.30 per tablet.
Finpecia comes in blister strips of 15 tablets. Choose a pack of 90, 150 or 180 tablets – roughly 3, 5 or 6 months of daily treatment.
Uses of Finpecia
Finpecia (finasteride 1 mg) is used for:
- Male pattern hair loss – gradual thinning on the crown and top of the head, and a receding hairline, caused by the hormone DHT.
It helps slow down further hair loss and, in many men, regrows some hair. It works best when started early, while the hair follicles are still active. It does not work for hair loss caused by illness, stress, nutritional problems or medicines.
Finpecia is for adult men only. It must not be used by women or children.
How does Finpecia work?
In men with a genetic tendency to hair loss, the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) gradually shrinks the hair follicles on the scalp, so the hairs they produce become thinner and shorter until they stop growing.
Finasteride blocks the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which turns testosterone into DHT. At 1 mg a day it lowers DHT levels in the scalp by around 60%, which lets the follicles recover and slows or stops the balding process.
How long does it take? Hair loss usually slows within 3 months. Visible regrowth normally takes 3 to 6 months, and the full effect is seen after about 12 months of daily use. If you stop taking it, the hair you gained is usually lost again within about 12 months.
Finpecia dosage: how to take it
- Take one 1 mg tablet once a day, with or without food.
- Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not split or crush it.
- Take it at about the same time every day to make it a habit.
- Taking more than one tablet a day will not work faster or better.
- If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next one at the usual time – do not take two tablets together.
- Keep taking it for at least 6 to 12 months before judging the result.
Always follow the dose your doctor prescribes.
Finpecia side effects
Most men take finasteride 1 mg without problems. Side effects are uncommon and often settle over time.
Possible side effects:
- Lower sex drive
- Difficulty getting an erection
- Reduced volume of semen or other changes in ejaculation
- Breast tenderness or enlargement
- Skin rash or itching
Stop taking it and speak to your doctor straight away if you notice:
- Low mood, depression or thoughts of harming yourself
- A lump, pain or discharge from the nipple, or other changes in the breast
- Swelling of the lips, face, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing
- Testicular pain
In a small number of men, sexual side effects have been reported to continue after stopping treatment. Discuss any concerns with your doctor.
Who should not take Finpecia?
Do not take Finpecia if you:
- Are a woman or a child
- Are allergic to finasteride or any ingredient of the tablet
- Already take finasteride 5 mg or dutasteride for an enlarged prostate
Pregnancy warning: women who are or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets, because the medicine can be absorbed through the skin and may harm a male baby. Whole, coated tablets are safe to touch.
Talk to your doctor first if you:
- Have liver problems
- Have a history of depression
- Are having a PSA blood test for prostate cancer – finasteride roughly halves PSA levels, so tell your doctor you take it
- Are planning to have a child – finasteride can lower sperm count in some men
Finpecia drug interactions
Finasteride has very few known drug interactions, but always tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you use.
- Other 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (finasteride 5 mg, dutasteride) – do not combine.
- Minoxidil – can be used together with finasteride; many men use both for better results.
- Saw palmetto and other herbal hair-loss products – ask your doctor before combining.
- PSA blood tests – finasteride lowers PSA readings; your doctor will allow for this.
How to store Finpecia
Store Finpecia below 30°C in a dry place, in the original blister strip to protect it from light and moisture. Keep out of the sight and reach of children and pregnant women, and do not use after the expiry date on the pack.

Is Finpecia the same as Propecia?
Finpecia contains the same active ingredient (finasteride) at the same strength (1 mg) as Propecia®, so it works in the same way. It is made by Cipla, one of India’s largest pharmaceutical companies, and costs much less than the brand.
