What is Geftinat 250?
Geftinat 250 is a generic Iressa tablet made by Natco Pharma. Each tablet contains 250 mg of gefitinib, the same active ingredient and strength as Iressa®. It is a targeted therapy for non-small cell lung cancer in people whose tumour carries an EGFR mutation.

Uses of Geftinat 250
Gefitinib is used for:
- Locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumour has activating EGFR mutations, as first-line treatment or after earlier chemotherapy.
An EGFR mutation test on the tumour confirms whether this medicine is suitable.
How does Geftinat 250 work?
Gefitinib is an EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor. It blocks the signal from the mutated epidermal growth factor receptor inside cancer cells, which slows their growth and encourages them to die.
Geftinat 250 dosage: how to take it
- The usual dose is 250 mg (one tablet) once a day, with or without food, at the same time each day.
- Swallow whole with water. If you cannot swallow, your doctor or pharmacist can advise on dispersing it in water.
- Do not take a missed dose within 12 hours of the next one.
- Your doctor may pause treatment for troublesome diarrhoea, skin reactions or breathing problems.
Geftinat 250 side effects
Common: diarrhoea, acne-like rash, dry or itchy skin, nausea, loss of appetite, mouth sores, tiredness, raised liver enzymes.
Serious – get medical help for: sudden or worsening breathlessness or cough (possible interstitial lung disease), severe diarrhoea, severe eye pain or redness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe skin blistering or peeling.
Who should not take Geftinat 250?
Do not take Geftinat if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or are allergic to gefitinib.
Tell your doctor first if you have liver or lung disease, eye problems or a history of stomach ulcers. Use effective contraception during treatment and for at least 2 weeks afterwards. Liver function is checked regularly.
Geftinat 250 drug interactions
- Rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, St John’s wort – lower gefitinib levels.
- Itraconazole, ketoconazole – raise levels.
- Omeprazole, ranitidine and antacids – reduce absorption when stomach acid is lowered.
- Warfarin – INR monitoring needed.
- Metoprolol – levels may rise.
How to store Geftinat 250
Store below 25°C in a dry place in the original bottle. Keep out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
