What is Tamoxican 20?

Uses of Tamoxican 20
Tamoxifen is used for:
- Early oestrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer, after surgery, to reduce the risk of the cancer coming back.
- Advanced or metastatic breast cancer.
- Reducing breast cancer risk in some high-risk women, as directed by a specialist.
How does Tamoxican 20 work?
Tamoxifen is a selective oestrogen receptor modulator (SERM). In breast tissue it blocks oestrogen from attaching to cancer cells, which slows or stops their growth. Unlike aromatase inhibitors it can be used before and after the menopause.
Tamoxican 20 dosage: how to take it
- The usual dose is 20 mg once a day (some doctors prescribe 10 mg twice a day).
- Swallow with water, with or without food, at the same time each day.
- Treatment often lasts 5 to 10 years, as directed by your oncologist.
- Do not stop without speaking to your doctor.
Tamoxican 20 side effects
Common: hot flushes, vaginal discharge or dryness, irregular periods, nausea, tiredness, mood changes, weight changes.
Serious – get medical help for: leg swelling or pain, sudden breathlessness or chest pain (blood clots), unusual vaginal bleeding after the menopause, sudden vision changes, severe headache or weakness, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Who should not take Tamoxican 20?
Do not take Tamoxican if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, are breastfeeding, or are allergic to tamoxifen.
Tell your doctor first if you have had blood clots or a stroke, have liver disease, high triglycerides, or cataracts. Use effective non-hormonal contraception while taking it. Regular gynaecological check-ups are advised.
Tamoxican 20 drug interactions
- Warfarin – bleeding risk increases.
- Strong CYP2D6 inhibitors (paroxetine, fluoxetine, bupropion) – may reduce tamoxifen’s effect.
- Rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin – lower tamoxifen levels.
- Aromatase inhibitors (anastrozole, letrozole) – do not take together unless directed.
How to store Tamoxican 20
Store below 30°C in a dry place in the original blister strip, away from light. Keep out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
