Uses of Zecyte 250
Abiraterone is prescribed, together with a steroid (prednisone or prednisolone), for men with:

- Newly diagnosed high-risk metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer – together with androgen deprivation therapy.

How does Zecyte 250 work?
Abiraterone is a CYP17 inhibitor. It blocks an enzyme (CYP17) that the body, the testicles and the tumour itself use to make androgens such as testosterone. With less androgen available, prostate cancer cells that depend on it grow more slowly.
Because blocking this enzyme also lowers cortisol and raises other hormones, abiraterone is always taken together with a steroid such as prednisone or prednisolone to prevent side effects.
How long does it take to work? Hormone levels fall within days, but benefit is judged over months with PSA tests and scans. It is taken every day for as long as your oncology team advises.
Zecyte 250 dosage: how to take it
- The usual dose is 1,000 mg once a day – four 250 mg tablets – taken together with prednisone or prednisolone as prescribed.
- Take it on an empty stomach: no food for at least 2 hours before and 1 hour after the dose. Food can greatly increase the amount absorbed.
- Swallow the tablets whole with water.
- If you miss a dose, take your usual dose the next day. Never take extra tablets to make up for a missed dose.
- Your doctor will set your dose and may lower it if you have liver problems.
If you think you have taken too much, contact a doctor or emergency service straight away.
Zecyte 250 side effects
Like all medicines, abiraterone can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
Common side effects:
- Swollen ankles or legs (fluid retention)
- Low potassium in the blood
- High blood pressure
- Urinary tract infection
- Raised liver enzymes
- Tiredness, hot flushes and joint or muscle pain
- Diarrhoea or indigestion
Get medical help immediately if you have:
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine – possible liver problems
- Muscle weakness, twitching or a pounding heartbeat – possible low potassium
- Chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat, or sudden shortness of breath
- Severe weakness, dizziness or low blood sugar – possible adrenal problems
Your doctor will check your blood pressure, potassium and liver function regularly.
Who should not take Zecyte 250?
Do not take Zecyte 250 if you:
- Are a woman who is pregnant or may become pregnant
- Are allergic to abiraterone or any other ingredient of the tablet
- Have severe liver impairment
Important safety information:
- Use a condom during sex and another effective contraception if your partner could become pregnant, during treatment and for at least 3 weeks after the last dose.
- Women who are pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets without gloves.
- Tell your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or a history of adrenal problems.
Zecyte 250 drug interactions
Tell your doctor about every medicine you take, including those bought without a prescription and herbal products. Important interactions include:
- CYP2D6 medicines such as dextromethorphan, metoprolol and some antidepressants – abiraterone can raise their levels.
- Strong CYP3A4 inducers such as rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin and St John’s wort – can lower abiraterone levels.
- Spironolactone – may act on the same receptors and is best avoided.
- Radium-223 – not recommended in combination with abiraterone and prednisone.
How to store Zecyte 250
Store Zecyte 250 below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light, in the original bottle with the cap tightly closed. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children, and do not use it after the expiry date printed on the pack.

Is Zecyte 250 the same as Zytiga?
Zecyte 250 contains the same active ingredient (abiraterone acetate) at the same strength (250 mg) as Zytiga® 250 mg, so it works in the same way. The difference is the manufacturer, the name, the price and possibly the look of the tablet.
Why must abiraterone be taken with prednisone?
Abiraterone lowers cortisol, which can cause fluid retention, low potassium and high blood pressure. A small dose of prednisone or prednisolone replaces the missing hormone and prevents these effects.
Why is it taken on an empty stomach?
Food, especially fatty food, can increase the amount of abiraterone absorbed many times over, which raises the risk of side effects. Take it at least 2 hours after eating and wait 1 hour before eating.
Is the 500 mg tablet the same as two 250 mg tablets?
The same total dose can be reached with two 500 mg tablets or four 250 mg tablets. Follow the dose and tablet strength on your prescription.
